Explore this natural wonder with its unique rock formations and learn about its geological history
The Giant’s Causeway is a natural wonder and UNESCO World Heritage Site located in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It is a geological formation made up of thousands of hexagonal basalt columns that were formed by volcanic activity around 60 million years ago. The columns are interlocked like a jigsaw puzzle and are mostly hexagonal in shape, although some have up to eight sides.
The legend behind the formation of the Giant’s Causeway involves the giant Finn McCool, who is said to have built the causeway as a bridge to Scotland so he could fight a rival giant. When he arrived in Scotland, he discovered that the rival was much bigger than he had anticipated, so he retreated back to Northern Ireland, destroying the causeway behind him so the Scottish giant could not follow him.
Visitors to the Giant’s Causeway can explore the site by walking along marked trails and seeing the different formations up close. Some of the notable formations include the Giant’s Boot, the Organ, and the Chimney Stacks. In addition to the natural beauty of the site, there is also a visitor center that offers exhibits and information about the formation of the causeway, as well as the local folklore surrounding it.Giant’s Causeway is a natural wonder and UNESCO World Heritage Site located in County Antrim, Northern Ireland.
