Murvagh Beach

Murvagh Beach: A Gem of Ireland's Donegal Bay

Discover the serene beauty of Murvagh Beach, Donegal's coastal haven.

Embark on an unforgettable adventure at Murvagh Beach, a picturesque 2km stretch of sand along Donegal Bay, adjacent to Donegal Golf Club. Boasting a Blue Flag status, this enchanting beach is backed by expansive dunes and lush forest, offering endless opportunities for exploration and relaxation. Bask in the sun, wade in the calm waters, or stroll along the shoreline with breathtaking views of Mountcharles, Raneely, Crownarad Mountain, and the majestic Sliabh Liag cliffs.

Located near the charming village of Laghey on County Donegal's southwestern coast, Murvagh Beach is perfect for a family day out. The sand dunes, designated a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), lead to the serene Murvagh Forest, which features picturesque walking trails. Sheltered from strong currents, the beach is ideal for swimming and picnicking.

Committed to preserving its pristine beauty, Murvagh Beach operates under the An Taisce Pack it in Pack it out programme. Visitors are encouraged to "Leave no Trace," responsibly disposing of rubbish away from the beach. Consequently, Donegal County Council does not provide litter bins or recycling facilities at the site.

A convenient car park is available just behind the beach, accessible via a path through the sand dunes. Here, you'll find exceptional vistas of Crownarad and Sliabh Liag, as well as restroom facilities. Beach lifeguards are on duty from June to September, between 12:00 pm and 6:30 pm. Take note of the flag system for water safety: Red/Yellow flags signify safe swimming conditions with lifeguards on duty, Red flags warn of high hazard, and No flags indicate that no lifeguards are present.

Beyond the beach, explore the nearby village of Laghy, home to quaint shops and eateries. The bustling town of Donegal, just 5 kilometers away, offers a variety of amenities to cater to visitors' needs.

While visiting Murvagh Beach, take advantage of the area's attractions. Try your hand at golf at the neighboring Donegal Golf Club, embark on a scenic hike to the awe-inspiring Sliabh Liag cliffs, or immerse yourself in local history at the Donegal Castle. With so much to see and do, your Murvagh Beach experience will be truly unforgettable.
