Rathfarnham Castle, located in the leafy suburb of Rathfarnham, Dublin, has a rich history dating back to the Elizabethan period. It was constructed in 1583 for Adam Loftus, a Yorkshire clergyman and politician, who went on to become Archbishop of Dublin and Lord Chancellor of Ireland. The castle is a magnificent example of an Elizabethan fortified house in Ireland, complete with four flanker towers.

In the late eighteenth century, Rathfarnham Castle was remodeled by some of the finest architects of the day, including Sir William Chambers and James ‘Athenian’ Stuart. The house was transformed into an elegant and grand mansion, which now hosts a wealth of exhibitions and cultural events. Visitors to the castle can see a collection of family portraits by Angelica Kauffman, Sir Peter Lely, and Hugh Douglas Hamilton, among others.
