Desmond Castle Adare is an exemplary representation of the fortified medieval castles that dot the Irish landscape. Strategically located on the banks of the River Maigue, the castle held a commanding position from where the lords could keep an eye on any traffic passing to or from the Shannon Estuary. The castle was built to provide the utmost strength and security, with a formidable square keep forming its core. The keep stands within a walled ward, which is further surrounded by a moat, creating an impregnable defense system.
Throughout its storied history, Desmond Castle Adare has changed hands several times, with various families vying for its ownership. However, it was during the sixteenth century that it became a key bastion of the earls of Desmond. These powerful lords made extensive renovations to the castle, ensuring it remained a formidable stronghold.
Despite its impressive defenses, the castle fell to the English during the Second Desmond Rebellion, after a bloody siege. The victorious English forces laid waste to the building in 1657 during the Cromwellian invasion. Fortunately, restorers have since worked tirelessly to restore the castle to its former glory.
Today, visitors can take guided tours of Desmond Castle Adare to experience the courageous spirit of the FitzGeralds and other noble families who have called this magnificent fortress home. Walking through the castle's halls and courtyards, visitors can imagine themselves as brave defenders, guarding against potential attackers and protecting their home and lands. Desmond Castle Adare is a testament to the resilience of the people of Ireland and a reminder of the country's rich history and heritage.
