Trim, a heritage town in Ireland, is home to an impressive collection of medieval buildings, with Trim Castle being the most noteworthy. As a matter of fact, it is the largest Anglo-Norman fortification in Ireland, built by Hugh de Lacy and his successors over a period of 30 years. The central fortification is a towering three-storey keep, featuring a monumental 20-sided tower that is cruciform in shape. Its impenetrable defense system comprised of a ditch, curtain wall, and water-filled moat made it virtually impregnable in its day.

Thanks to modern walkways, visitors can now look down and appreciate the sheer size and thickness of the castle walls from the interior of the keep. Although the castle is often referred to as King John's Castle, King John himself preferred to stay in his tent on the other side of the river when visiting the town. Trim Castle's significance also stems from the fact that Richard II visited Trim in 1399 and held Prince Hal, later known as Henry V, as a captive in the castle.

Overall, a visit to Trim Castle is a chance to step back in time and marvel at one of Ireland's most significant medieval fortifications. With its imposing structure, intricate defense system, and rich historical significance, it's a must-see destination for anyone interested in Irish history and architecture.
